Locs...

So, apparently, it's going to take a year for my hair to lock. According to this book I'm reading, I don't have it in front of me so I can't tell you the title, but the author is saying that my braids are going to remain braids for the next 12 months! Hum...that give me enough time to decide if I really want to lock my hair: I do!
At least I have this piece of information because I've been sitting here for the past 2 months wondering exactly why my hair isn't locking.

It's an investment.

It takes time and learning about you.

It is emotional, spiritual and you'll know who accepts you based on appearance and who loves you unconditionally.

It will tell you who really is a part of the revolution and who just likes being seen as one.

This process will define and distance you.

Enjoy and understand during your decisionmaking process.

Good luck with the process. I started locking in December and it will definitely teach you patience!

if your hair is of a very fine texture, you might have to 'interlock' in order for the locking to take hold.

i agree with hassan though, it's DEFINITELY an investment, emotionally, spiritually, and physically.

emotionally, you've gotta rein in any impatience you have cuz the process takes forever, any insecurities you have because the locs are gonna look jacked for a while no matter what you do.

spiritually, you're gonna have to remain positive through the entire locking phase cuz your energy is being absorbed into your hair and you ain't trying to lock bad vibes in those babies.

physically, if you're very active, you'll have to come up with an alternative while your hair is locking because the more you wash them, the more difficult it will be in the initial locking phase (that changes once you're out of the first phase, though.

good luck with it, though. also, know that folk will look at you in a different way, which might not be the most positive one cuz you know folk got stereotypical views about folk with locs. i say fugg 'em, but i definitely have to boost up that particular part of my personality to deal with the bs sometimes.

I've contemplated locing my hair and gained a wealth of information (to the point of overload)regarding locing and maintaining natural hair in general at nappturality.com. in case you don't already know about it, you may find it useful.

naani.com is also a great loc info site....It has a detailed description of the various stages (baby, teenage, mature, elder) of the loc process, and online interviews with folks going these stages. Also how to care for your locs througout all of the various stages.
